Gattuso's right to sound paranoid—belief is the only thing keeping Lazio's pretenders from looking like everyone else.  •  Simeone's finally caught Aragonés in the wins column, which means we're about to hear how this proves something about his greatness that it probably doesn't.  •  Bayern created enough to win three derbies and walked away with one point, which is what happens when you play like you've already won before the whistle goes.  •  Fabregas getting away with a penalty in a one-goal game tells you everything about Como's luck this season; enjoy it while it lasts.  •  Alexander ditching five years of shape mid-season for energy management is either smart adaptation or panic—Stoke will tell us which.

Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Liverpool progressed past Chelsea in a Carabao Cup shootout at Anfield, winning 6-5 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, according to The Guardian Football. Wesley Fofana's penalty sailed high over the crossbar to confirm Liverpool's victory and extend their remarkable record against Chelsea from the spot. The two sides have now met on penalties five times, with Liverpool winning all five encounters.

The match remained goalless until late in the first half when Chelsea took the lead from the penalty spot in the 39th minute. Ryan Gravenberch was judged to have fouled Moises Caicedo in the box, and Morgan Rogers converted confidently. Liverpool responded almost immediately when Wesley Fofana handled a corner kick, conceding a penalty of their own. Cody Gakpo equalised in the 43rd minute, leaving the score at 1-1 heading into the second half.

Both teams used much-changed lineups and created few clear chances in open play. After 90 minutes produced no further goals, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout. The shootout extended into sudden death, with both Ryan Gravenberch and debutant Emmanuel Emegha missing for their respective sides. Joe Gomez then scored for Liverpool before Fofana's wayward effort ended Chelsea's hopes.

Liverpool will face Bournemouth in the quarter-finals. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso acknowledged the disappointment but noted his team had played with courage and produced an improved display following their home defeat to Tottenham on the previous Saturday.
