De Zerbi hails ‘complete team’ Spurs after rare 2-0 Chelsea win
Tottenham secured only their second Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge in 34 visits on Saturday, defeating Chelsea 2-0 in what Roberto De Zerbi described as a significant moment for the club. According to ESPN FC, an own goal from Mike Penders in the 77th minute and a Mathys Tel strike ten minutes later settled the match against a Chelsea side reduced to ten players.
Cole Palmer was sent off after receiving two yellow cards during the second half. The first came after he reacted to Mateus Fernandes following a handball, whilst the second was awarded for a late challenge on Conor Gallagher. The dismissal came between Penders' own goal and Tel's finish, which the forward achieved with a 20-yard shot into the bottom corner.
De Zerbi told ESPN FC the victory represented a turning point following a difficult start to the season. Tottenham had occupied bottom place despite spending approximately £400 million on ten new signings after narrowly avoiding relegation previously. The manager stated the squad were improving in mentality and relationships, describing them as now constituting a complete team. He referenced previous matches against Aston Villa and Everton where Spurs had performed well but lacked finishing quality.
De Zerbi revealed the squad held a meeting before drawing 1-1 at Manchester United earlier this month, which he believed could signal a change in their campaign. ESPN FC reported Spurs climbed to 12th place following the win, whilst Chelsea remained fourth under Xabi Alonso, who suffered his first home defeat as Blues manager. Chelsea played without João Pedro due to an unspecified injury sustained in training.
