Conte denies advanced Manchester United talks amid managerial speculation
Antonio Conte has dismissed reports of advanced negotiations with Manchester United, stating through Instagram that no such talks are at an active stage. Italian newspaper La Repubblica had claimed the former Chelsea manager had held discussions with United's board about succeeding Michael Carrick following the club's 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como. According to BBC Sport, Conte is interested in the position, though the manager has now sought to clarify his situation publicly.
Conte addressed claims that he had made specific demands of United, including full control over transfer policy and the ability to appoint his own staff. He characterised reports detailing these requirements and concerns about his management style as unfounded. The Italian stated that should a genuine opportunity materialise, he would then enter formal discussions with the club involved to consider potential terms.
Carrick's position at Old Trafford has become uncertain following the midweek loss to Como in Europe, though BBC Sport reports he is expected to remain in charge for Sunday's Premier League fixture against Bournemouth. BBC Sport sources indicate United have begun identifying replacement candidates, with former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and ex-Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann also considered alongside Conte.
Conte has been without a club since departing Napoli in May. The Independent reports he has stated his next managerial appointment will be a carefully deliberated decision dependent on the right circumstances presenting themselves. He has previously managed Chelsea and Tottenham in the Premier League, and has also been linked with Juventus, the club where he won three Serie A titles between 2011 and 2014.
