Bayern Munich’s Kompany stable in hospital after collapsing at training
Vincent Kompany collapsed during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday and has been hospitalised for further examination, the club confirmed. According to reporting from ESPN FC, the head coach, aged 40, was observing the reserves team's session when the incident occurred. Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl told reporters that Kompany's condition remained stable and that doctors were conducting tests to establish the cause of the collapse.
Kompany had been managing a viral infection throughout the previous week. ESPN FC reported that his assistant Aaron Danks indicated on Tuesday the illness had affected the Belgian's legs. Despite these health concerns, Kompany returned to the dugout for Wednesday's Champions League draw against Arsenal after missing a training session and pregame press conference on Tuesday. Following that match, Kompany acknowledged he had attempted to push through the illness without properly heeding his body's signals.
Eberl stated that whilst initial test results had emerged, further investigations were needed to determine the precise cause and recovery timeline. According to ESPN FC, the executive indicated the absence could extend for weeks rather than days, with no specific return date being set. Eberl emphasised that Kompany would only resume duties once fully fit.
Bavarian Football Works reported that Kompany had spent a night in hospital earlier in the week following initial health concerns, though those examinations returned negative results. The collapse also prompted postponement of Bayern Munich II's Regionalliga fixture against DJK Vilzing scheduled for Saturday, as both clubs agreed the decision was appropriate given the distress experienced by young players who witnessed the incident.
