Udinese appoint Zanetti as head coach after sacking Runjaic
Udinese have officially appointed Paolo Zanetti as head coach following the dismissal of Kosta Runjaic, according to Football Italia. The 43-year-old has signed a contract running until 30 June 2027. Runjaic's departure came hours after Udinese suffered a 5-2 home defeat to Roma on Saturday, a result that proved decisive given the club's deteriorating league position.
Udinese remain in serious difficulty near the foot of Serie A. The Bianconeri have accumulated only five points from ten matches and have not won in eight games, with their sole league victory this season coming against Monza on 29 August. The club released a statement thanking Runjaic and his assistants Przemyslaw Małecki and Alexander Trukan for their work across more than two years together.
Zanetti arrives having been without a club since Verona sacked him in February. At Hellas Verona, he guided the side to 14th place in the 2024-25 season. His appointment marks a return to a club where he previously achieved significant success, having led Venezia to Serie A promotion for the first time in 19 years during the 2020-21 campaign before spending one season in the top flight.
Zanetti's first match in charge will be particularly notable, as Udinese travel to face Venezia on Friday in a direct relegation battle. Venezia currently occupy bottom position in the division. The club has reportedly set strict contractual terms for Zanetti's successor, limiting his initial deal to the end of this season.
