Arsenal appealing a red card for a 16-year-old tells you everything about how soft the conversation around young players has become.  •  Portsmouth finally hiring someone to stop their players from falling apart every other week is less a sign of ambition and more an admission of chronic incompetence.  •  Hurzeler saying Brighton are getting stronger while Liverpool turned them inside out is the kind of self-soothing managers do when they've just been outclassed.  •  Fujimoto's loan move to Tokyo Verdy is what happens when a player can't hack the Championship — at least he'll find playing time somewhere.

Millwall’s defensive lapses continue after Portsmouth defeat

Millwall have developed a concerning pattern of conceding preventable goals since the international break, according to reporting by Southwark News Millwall. The issue came into sharp focus during last Saturday's match at Portsmouth, where the Lions surrendered a one-goal lead to lose the fixture. Despite establishing an early advantage within six minutes, Millwall allowed two goals in response, both stemming from defensive errors rather than sustained attacking pressure from the hosts.

The first Portsmouth goal arrived as an own goal ten minutes after Millwall's opener, while the second followed a sequence of basic mistakes that culminated in Jake Cooper's clearance deflecting off Thomas Waddingham and into the net. Manager Alex Neil acknowledged that his side had restricted Portsmouth to just two shots on target and performed solidly defensively overall during wet conditions at Fratton Park, but the lapses proved decisive. Neil indicated that Millwall had played significantly worse in previous matches whilst still securing victories, suggesting the defensive structure itself was adequate.

This pattern extends beyond the Portsmouth match. The previous week against Lincoln, Millwall conceded from similar circumstances: first when Andrei Coubis volleyed in directly from kick-off after the Lions switched off, then when Rob Street scored after multiple clearances failed to adequately deal with balls into the box. Neil attributed the Portsmouth defeat specifically to lapses in set-up and concentration, describing the second goal as stemming from a long clearance that Millwall failed to manage properly.

The recurring nature of these preventable concessions now represents the defining issue from recent performances rather than overall defensive structure or opposition quality.
