Adams and Stankovic help Venezia beat Napoli on Nicola’s debut
Venezia secured a 1-0 victory over Napoli to give new head coach Davide Nicola a winning start. Football Italia reported that Akor Adams provided the decisive goal, while Filip Stankovic saved a penalty from Kevin De Bruyne.
The change of manager followed a run of seven defeats across Serie A and the Coppa Italia under Giovanni Stroppa. Nicola's first match therefore ended with a marked improvement in the result, built on a second-half breakthrough and several important defensive interventions.
Adams put Venezia ahead after collecting a long pass from Simon Sohm. The forward held off Amir Rrahmani, moved inside and saw his shot take a touch off the Napoli defender, leaving Alex Meret unable to keep it out.
Napoli introduced De Bruyne and Rasmus Hojlund from the bench as they chased an equaliser. Hojlund was fouled by Matias Moreno for the penalty, but Stankovic stopped De Bruyne's attempt. Juan Jesus also intervened to deny Hojlund close to the goal line.
Stankovic later kept out an effort from Stanislav Lobotka as Venezia protected their advantage. For Napoli, the setback came after their 3-1 Champions League defeat at Villarreal, adding another disappointing result to a difficult week.
