Manchester United Collapse From 2-0 Up as Brighton End Carabao Cup Run

Manchester United have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after an extraordinary 3-2 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford, surrendering a two-goal lead in a result that has not happened at the ground for half a century.

Shea Lacey and Mason Mount put United 2-0 ahead inside the opening 10 minutes on Wednesday night. Brighton responded through Charalampos Kostoulas before half-time, then Pascal Gross and Maxim De Cuyper struck within four second-half minutes to complete the comeback.

Manchester United’s 50-year unwanted record

The scale of the collapse is what makes the result particularly damaging. According to Reuters, it is the first time since September 1976 that Manchester United have lost a home match after leading by two goals. Tottenham Hotspur were the last side to overturn that advantage at Old Trafford, also winning 3-2.

United had raced into control through 15-year-old Lacey in the eighth minute and Mount two minutes later. But Brighton were back in the contest when Kostoulas scored in first-half stoppage time.

The game then flipped completely after the break. Gross equalised in the 65th minute before substitute De Cuyper scored Brighton’s third in the 69th, leaving United chasing a tie they had appeared to have under control.

Michael Carrick takes responsibility

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick accepted responsibility after the defeat, saying the second-half performance could not be accepted. The result compounds a difficult start to the season for United, who are 13th in the Premier League with one win from their opening four league matches.

It also follows the controversial 1-0 derby defeat to Manchester City last weekend, meaning Carrick now has an immediate task to restore confidence before United return to league action.

Another early domestic cup exit

The Carabao Cup had represented a realistic route to silverware, but United are out at their first hurdle for the second consecutive season. Last year they were eliminated on penalties by League Two side Grimsby Town before later losing at home to Brighton in the FA Cup.

That means United have now suffered three consecutive domestic cup defeats. Last season was already their first since 1981-82 without winning a round in either domestic cup competition.

What next for Manchester United?

United’s response now becomes the story. A side that had enough control to establish a 2-0 lead in 10 minutes ultimately failed to protect it against a Brighton team that made six changes.

Brighton advance to the fourth round, while Manchester United are left with one fewer competition and increased scrutiny on Carrick’s side. After a derby defeat and a historic cup collapse in the space of days, their next Premier League performance will carry considerably more pressure.
