Gómez strikes from 55.7 yards as Brighton demolish Palace in long-range goal showcase
Diego Gómez scored a long-distance goal for Brighton in their 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday, according to ESPN FC. The Paraguay international midfielder collected the ball in the centre circle, turned and fired towards goal from 55.7 yards after noticing Palace keeper Walter Benítez away from his line. The strike found the net, adding Gómez to the list of Premier League players who have scored from near the halfway line.
Gómez's effort represents the furthest distance from which an outfield player has scored in the Premier League since Wayne Rooney's goal for Everton against West Ham United almost nine years ago. Rooney's strike travelled 63.4 yards, making it the longest outfield goal on record in the competition's history.
ESPN FC ranked Gómez's goal alongside other notable long-range efforts in Premier League history. Howard scored from inside his own area for Everton, though the publication noted the goal benefited from favourable wind conditions and several bounces before crossing the line. Peter Robinson struck directly from a free kick estimated at around 95 yards for Tottenham against Watford, with the ball sailing over Ben Foster into the goal.
Asmir Begović holds the record for the longest-distance Premier League goal at 101 yards, scored from inside his own penalty area just 13 seconds into a match. ESPN FC reported that Begović's achievement, like Howard's, was substantially aided by strong prevailing wind conditions at the time.
