Arsenal’s perfect start to the Premier League season came to a brutal end on Saturday as Brighton & Hove Albion produced a stunning 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s defending champions arrived on the south coast having won their opening four league matches and conceded only once. They left after their heaviest defeat in three years, with Brighton delivering one of the standout results of the young 2026/27 season.

Brighton set the tone with an aggressive, high-intensity performance and took the lead in the 31st minute through Pascal Gross. The midfielder’s low finish found the net via the post, rewarding a home side that consistently disrupted Arsenal’s rhythm.

Charalampos Kostoulas then doubled Brighton’s advantage before half-time. Arsenal had threatened at the other end moments earlier through Bukayo Saka, but Brighton broke quickly and Kostoulas finished the counter-attack to put the champions in serious trouble.

Any hope of an Arsenal comeback disappeared after the interval when Chema Andres headed home from a Gross corner to make it 3-0. It was Andres’ first Premier League goal and completed a memorable afternoon for Brighton during the club’s 125th-anniversary celebrations.

Arsenal’s perfect Premier League record is over

The scale of the result makes it more significant than a routine early-season defeat. Arsenal had won all four of their Premier League matches before travelling to Brighton and had built their strong start around the division’s best defensive record.

That defensive strength disappeared at the Amex. Brighton scored three times and created repeated problems with their pressing, movement and speed in transition. Arsenal, meanwhile, struggled technically and failed to impose the control that had underpinned their opening run.

The victory was also another reminder of Brighton’s ability to trouble the Premier League’s biggest clubs. Their intensity prevented Arsenal from settling, while Gross was central to the result with a goal and an assist.

Kostoulas’ finish and Andres’ breakthrough goal added to the sense that Brighton have multiple attacking threats rather than relying on one established scorer.

What the result means for the Premier League title race

Arsenal remain firmly in the title picture, but the 3-0 scoreline is the first major setback of their defence. After four straight league victories, Arteta now has an international break in which to assess why his side were so comprehensively beaten.

Manchester City can move three points clear if they beat Sunderland on Sunday, while Brighton have inserted themselves into the early group near the top of the table.

One defeat will not define Arsenal’s season, but the manner of it will attract attention. A team that had looked controlled and defensively secure through the opening month was exposed by Brighton’s press and direct attacking play.

For Brighton, this was more than three points. Beating the reigning champions 3-0, ending their perfect start and doing it during a landmark anniversary weekend gives Hurzeler’s team one of the defining results of the Premier League season so far.
